Responsibility Is A Power Position
If you want to change your life, take responsibility for it.
There is a big difference between those who are living a life they love and doing what they love and those who aren’t and that difference is leadership. Leadership lives at the intersection of control and responsibility.
We often see leadership as something that lives just in the workplace, but it goes beyond that.
Leadership starts off first and foremost as a mindset. It ignites a different way of being and seeing. And after, is showcased in how we show up, pave our own path, and do the necessary work (both the inner and outer) to build.
If you want to live a life that you love and do the work you love, it's time to see yourself as a leader and start taking responsibility for the things you can control and generate action towards building the life that you want.
Where you are now is a choice. The only way to change your life is to be a leader within it.
It's challenging to be a leader today. We work so hard to fit in, we people please, we deplete our own power with negative self-talk and fear, we spend time in complaint and use every excuse in the book as to why we can’t do something. So many of us have said the things we want to do out loud but have yet to action on them.
What are you waiting for?
Well, that’s an easy question to answer. You’re waiting to wake up and realize that everything that you don’t have in your life is because you are choosing to not be a leader. You think you’re taking the easy road but in fact, it’s the path of resistance, regret, and complete depletion of your power. I say this having spent my share of time in the three other quadrants below. It wasn’t until I took responsibility and control and stepped into leadership that my whole life changed. No one will save you, create for you, put your work out there in the world for you, etc. It’s all on you!
Coach K once famously said, "In every aspect of life, whether in sports or beyond, responsibility is the cornerstone of achievement."
These words encapsulate a fundamental truth about the nature of achievement and success. Greatness is not merely a product of talent or circumstance; it is forged through responsibility, it’s forged through leadership.
If responsibility is power, why do we give it away so easily?
We give our responsibility away because of how damaging our internal dialogue is on a day to day basis. If your internal narrative is constantly beating you down, responsibility is hard pill to swallow.
Most people don’t want to hear the FACT that they are where they are because of their choices, their mindset, their actions, the content they consume, who they surround themselves with, etc.
The more we beat ourselves up with our words, the more likely we are to remain where we are vs. create a life that we want.
It’s time to take responsibility.
I have yet to meet someone that has built an inspiring life for themselves that didn’t take responsibility for it.
So a few questions for you to sit with, unravel, own, and take action on:
Are you currently showing up as a leader in your life? (This is a YES or NO answer).
If not, what's holding you back? Are you people pleasing? Blaming others? Or in complaint about your life?
What do you want out of your life?
How will your current mindset bring your wants to life? What do you need to change?
Are you ready to take responsibility? What are three tactical things you’ll do to get you closer to your goals?
The work we’re in towards achieving what we want is always a blend of inner and outer work. Commit to it, be kind to yourself, and own the fact that you are capable of leading your own life and having a life you not only love but that you can thrive within.
Take the lead,
