Be In Service
The fastest way to get out of your own head is to focus on someone else.
A client came to me a year ago completely stuck.
Let’s face it, we have all been there before. Myself included.
Nothing felt like it was going right. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his career. His life felt like it was falling apart. Was it really? No, but life was shifting for him. He just couldn't see it yet.
After our first call, I told him two things that were non-negotiable:
Move your body every damn day.
Be In Service.
Most people think the answer when you’re stuck is to spend more time thinking about yourself.
Sometimes the answer is the exact opposite.
I needed him to get out of his head, to get out of the spiral. To reconnect with his values of community and connection. Quite frankly, these weren’t just his values, these are human values whether we’d like to admit it or not.
Being in service doesn’t need to be you doing something extraordinary, as there are so many moments in our day-to-day lives when we can extend a hand, lean in, and just stop and consider someone else.
I remember getting texts from him about how good it felt to be in service. How much it made not only someone else’s day but his own. He started seeing his value again and you know the first step to getting unstuck is? Is recognizing the immense value you have in the world. When you change the way you see yourself, you start seeing opportunities you couldn't see before.
When we’re stuck, we become the center of our own attention. It exhausts us. Every conversation comes back to us. Our problems feel bigger and bigger because we’re looking at them under a microscope. Service is what breaks that cycle. It reminds you that you have something valuable to offer.
It gets you out of your own fucking way!
I truly believe there are TWO quick ways to change your state, to go from a contracted state to an expansive one, and that is MOVEMENT and SERVICE.
The beautiful thing about service is that it changes two lives at once.
Never underestimate the impact you can have on another human being. A conversation can change someone’s day. Encouragement can restore someone’s confidence. Believing in someone before they believe in themselves can change the direction of their life.
We often think our greatest contribution has to be something monumental, when, in reality, it’s usually found in the ordinary moments where we choose to show up for another person and in turn, we show up for ourselves.
Get out of your own bubble and leave people better than you found them.
It costs zero dollars but will significantly change your life.
